Bob Seger’s Night Moves: A 1961 Pontiac Catalina Convertible

One of the reasons many people are drawn to classic cars is the feeling of nostalgia attached to them. They symbolize a time worth remembering and often have interesting stories of the happy times experienced by their owners. For Dennis and Mary Koss, the purchase of a ’61 Pontiac Catalina turned out to be one of those stories.
A Pontiac Catalina in great condition
Dennis and Mary Koss came by this car in a rather unique way. They owned another Pontiac Catalina and had been keeping an eye out for a convertible. One day Dennis’s friend Nino asked Dennis to accompany him to check out a Pontiac at a consignment dealership. Dennis and his friend proceeded to the business where the car was located, only a short distance away. The car turned out to be a restored 1961 Catalina Convertible. They looked over the car. It was in great condition. Dennis recommended that Nino buy the Catalina and told him it was a great deal. After much discussion, Nino decided this car wasn’t exactly what he was looking for. Dennis responded with “if you don’t buy that car, I will!”
“Night Moves”
At that point, Dennis asked who to make the ckeck payable to. The business owner responded with “Bob Seger”. Dennis was stunned! He and his wife Mary were huge Bob Seger fans! This 1961 Pontiac Catalina Convertible had been in Seger’s private collection, and was rarely used. When Dennis told his wife about the origins of her new vehicle, she was ecstatic and promptly named her new car “Night Moves” after Bob Seger’s hit record. “Night Moves” has won awards at several car shows and provided Dennis and Mary with many happy evenings cruising the legendary Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
Pontiac makes changes
Bob Seger’s ’61 Pontiac Catalina is a real beauty! 1961 was a time when big cars started being downsized, and Pontiac redesigned their full-sized vehicles, including the Catalina. It was the top seller that year. The new look featured a more square looking body with sculpted sides and smaller tail fins. There was also less chrome. Pontiac reintroduced the iconic split grille design that would easily identify their cars well into the future.
